Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone. Certain clinical effects and side effects demonstrate the androgenic properties of this class of drugs. Complete dissociation of anabolic and androgenic effects was not achieved. The actions of the anabolic steroids are therefore similar to those of the male sex hormones with the possibility of causing serious growth and sexual development disorders when given to young children. Anabolic steroids suppress the gonadotropic functions of the pituitary gland and can have a direct effect on the testicles.
During the exogenous administration of anabolic androgens, the endogenous release of testosterone is inhibited by inhibiting pituitary-luteinizing hormone (LH). At large doses, spermatogenesis can be suppressed by feedback inhibition of pituitary follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
Anabolic steroids have been reported to increase low density lipoproteins and decrease high density lipoproteins. These levels will return to normal when treatment is stopped.
In a single dose pharmacokinetic study of oxandrolone in the elderly, the mean elimination half-life was 13.3 hours. In an earlier single-dose pharmacokinetic study in younger volunteers, the mean elimination half-life was 10.4 hours. No significant differences were found between younger and older volunteers for time to peak, peak plasma concentration, or AUC after a single dose of oxandrolone. The correlation between plasma level and therapeutic effect was not defined.
